I've been battling a cold for over a week now; I thought I'd beaten it into submission last weekend but it came back with a vengeance, bringing a cough with it. Grr! All week, even though I've been sleeping well, I've woken up feeling like something the cat dragged in. Finally on Friday I snapped and called in sick, figuring that 3 days off in a row taking it easy was probably going to do me more good than struggling into work because I didn't want to lose a day's pay. That's what I did when I got the throat infections earlier this year and it just got me into even more of a pickle. Anyway, I spent most of Friday asleep and I do feel better so I think it was the smart move.
Today was a Good Day - i went and saw little Aunty Eve. Her next door neighbour, Sue, very kindly took us and her mother for lunch at the posh gym club where she's a member. It's on the waterfront and it's very swish. The restaurant is on the top floor and it has stunning views of the estuary and you can watch the container ships going in and out of the channel that leads to Chatham docks. We decided it was all very civilised :) The food was pretty good - I had fish and chips, very tasty - but the service was slow and a bit chaotic. I was assured this was unusual and we came to the conclusion that they were getting ready for a big bash tonight (possibly to coincide with the rugby) and that was why the basic stuff wasn't being paid much attention. We did get one main course comped because it was wrong, so that was something. I don't think we left much of a tip though :P
Aunty Eve is going good, still as stubborn and independent as ever. Sue drives a Range Rover and it's a steep climb in for me, never mind a 95 year old lady who isn't too steady on her pins. Would she let me (or anyone else) help her in and out of the car though? Nope, she would not and she was very decisive about it. *shakes head* Gotta admire that even when it does nearly lead to an accident. In order to climb into the back seat, Aunty Eve wrapped her hand around the door frame and very nearly got her fingers trapped in the passenger door which Sue's Mum was about to slam shut. Eep! Luckily, I'd stayed nearby in case Aunty Eve couldn't get in the car and was able to yelp a warning. Oh and Aunty Eve got in and out just fine, without my help thankyouverymuch :P
(Quick aside - I don't have much time for those that drive Range Rovers when they don't live in the middle of nowhere or have any other good reason to own such a gas guzzler. That said, boy, can I see the appeal now that I've ridden in one. You're well above the road, in a very solid vehicle and even as a passenger, I could tell it handled like a dream. I may, possibly, be slightly envious :P)
I got home in plenty of time to watch the Rugby World Cup semi-final between England and France. Wow. I'm thrilled to bits that we won and there was much happy Mitchy boogie-ing and squeaking, but it was definitely a game you enjoy more in retrospect that while you're watching. It was just too tight and tense and nerve-wracking, not to mention error-prone, to be a GOOD game of rugby, regardless of the result. Only the result actually made it bearable. And we beat the French. Hehehehehehehehehe.
And now I'm catching up on my US TV shows, having fallen slightly behind this week. Numb3rs continues to rock my small self-centred world with the Colby storyline and aftermath. There does seem to be a lot less maths than in previous seasons, in some fashion. I can't quite put my finger on it but Charlie seems to be less connected to the process than he was, possibly because we've been spending so much time focussing on the other characters, which isn't a bad thing (mmm Colbyinnavest, swoon! Thud!).
Cold Case continues to entertain, if not setting the world alight but then it never really does, it's more of an ol' reliable type of show, really. There are one or two interesting character developments shaping up, so I'm guessing November sweeps could be interesting. Bones is still fun, although this week's ep was so gruesome even I turned green, and I'm the gal that can watch Bones and CSI and the like whilst chomping happily on my dinner :P
Without A Trace has been the biggest let down of the returning shows so far, in the sense that it's really not sparking like it usually does. It feels flat at the moment, although I have great hopes of the storyline featuring Viv and James "Spike" Marster's cop character taking off.
Grey's Anatomy's episode this week was an absolute corker and it was about time it got back up to the heights I know it can reach. Good to see Bailey getting to kick butt and take names again and also develop as a character. Seriously, if Chandra Wilson doesn't get an Emmy award next time around, 'm gonna be pissed off, she's been sensational.
Stargate:Atlantis and CSI:NY continue to be good, the former in particular has been very watch-able. I would LOVE to get the inside scoop on the casting changes that have occurred on that show this season but sadly, no gossip appears to be leaking out. Dammit, don't they know nosy Mitchy's live for this stuff? :P Criminal Minds continues to be excellent, although I felt the whole Hotch quits/doesn't quit storyline was a bit rushed. I suspect it might have been more drawn out but for Mandy Pantinkin quitting, thus needing to lose his character. The character of Hotch was therefore much more pivotal from a story telling point of view and they needed that character leading the team ASAP, not angsting about his future. So I can understand it but still. Oh, btw, they didn't kill off Gideon in the end, but they kept you guessing right up until the last minute, the gits :)
Of the new new shows, Bionic Woman is probably the weakest and also the most annoying. I've not watched this week's ep yet so I'll save a full rant for another entry. Private Practice finally showed signs of life this week, in a fashion that makes me think it juuust might avoid mid-season cancellation. This was the first episode I watched where I was convinced the format could work if they get the right scripts. It's rapidly becoming my light relief show out of my TV roster :)
And on that note, I shall toddle back to my TV watching. I've got SG:A, BW and CSI:NY eps to watch :)
